Documentation: As an Integrated Process: Observations, Listening, Collaborating, Communicating / Pedagogical Documentation

In this workshop, participants will engage in conversations and understandings behind the meaning of what is documentation. Documentation as relationship, giving the visibility to the ideas and intelligence to the children and educators. We will discuss the importance of giving time to children to develop their theories. How can children share their theories with the group and show learning? What are some tools that can be used to follow children’s theories and interests?
Participants will also define the image of the child as defined by educators, society, and families. Discuss the meaning of documentation as a relationship and consider the interpretation of documentation, the process of slowing down to view documentation as a communicator and making learning visible. Participants will be practicing forms of documentation. Collecting and using data, gathering and using this data to make learning visible. There will be open presentations of work, inviting perspectives of the other participants to visit the documentation that each has done. Participants will discuss the relationship between documentation and assessment and pedagogical documentation.
Objectives
At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Analyze and define the differences between documentation and pedagogical documentation
- Understand the process of observation, listening, collaborating with other colleagues and children to work towards making learning visible.
- Collect data for documentation that is sufficient to support the children’s interest and learning processes.
- How to organize and place documentation to show the learning process
- Understand the process of documentation and what should be collected
Outline
Day 1:
- Introduction to Documentation Meaning. How do we define pedagogical documentation?
- Understanding documentation as a social constructivist approach
- Looking at ourselves as a community of learners in a social and cultural aspect and why.
- Defining the purpose of relationship as documentation
- How to listen, observe, and collect data for documentation: making learning visible.
- Developing theories based on children’s learning, interpretation and gathering further theories and hypotheses.
Day 2:
- The process of documentation in becoming pedagogical. What does it look like? How do you get there?
- Group Experiences of documentation and pedagogical documentation: Participants will be invited to explore the possibilities of documentation, unraveling questions such as Why document? Who is documentation for? What is being displayed? Why? Who is the audience?
- Learning how to interpret and invite different perspectives of observations and documentation
- Organizing and using data to set out documentation panels
- How to interpret documentation processes in order to follow interests and theories of children’s learning
- Hands on interactive: taking an object, participants will practice with a partner how to observe object, collect the data, and follow the process as discussed in the second part of how to listen, collect and use data for documentation.
Trainer’s Profile
Rosalba B. is a passionate and enthusiastic early learning educational consultant with vast experience working with children, their families, and colleagues. She is a Registered Early Childhood Educator with a BAA from York University, artist, researcher, mentor, collaborator, leader, and lifelong learner. She brings her journey of being Reggio inspired as continuous learning with others, building on relationships, creating deeper thinking sessions. Her goal is to continue to advocate for early learning, educators, and children. To inspire, many along the way.
Rosalba continues to visit the schools of Reggio Emilia which provide her with a deeper pedagogical understanding and inspiration for her consulting and workshop sessions. She has also worked as a lead teacher in the Seneca Lab School and part time professor in the School of Early Childhood Education at Seneca College. Rosalba is also a founder member of the Ontario Reggio Association which was established in 2007 as a non-profit organization for educators who are interested in the work and education system of the infant-toddler and preschools in Reggio Emilia.
Methodology
This workshop will incorporate both presentation on the foundations of pedagogical documentation as derived from the educators of Reggio Emilia, viewing examples of pedagogical documentation and collaborative hands-on experiences taking part in the process of documenting. Participants will have the opportunity to share and reflect upon their learning through the pedagogical documentation they will co-construct with colleagues. Participants are asked to bring along a device, such as a digital camera, smart phone or tablet to take images as part of the documentation process.
