The Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education has received world-wide recognition as being one of the best programs for young children and their development. Focusing on community, communication and the environment, early childhood and elementary educators alike will have the opportunity to unpack their individual beliefs about children and childhood while exploring the Reggio Emilia philosophy, environment and provocations.

Objectives
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the history of the Reggio Emilia approach and it’s foundation
  • Analyze the 7 principles and use them as a guide for teaching and learning
  • Reflect on their individual beliefs around children & childhood, and begin developing their Image of a Child
  • Explore thoughtful materials to create meaningful learning provocations (invitations to learn) with the 100 Languages in mind
  • Have tools and ideas to develop a Reggio Emilia-inspired learning environment

Outline 
Session 1: History & Vision

  • An introduction to the Reggio Emilia approach for teaching and learning
  • Analyzing the 7 Principles in the context of your own school, culture and community
  • The Image of a Child in Reggio Emilia
  • Your view of children and becoming a Reggio Emilia-inspired educator

Session 2: Environment as the Third Teacher

  • An introduction to the 100 Languages
  • Reflecting on your beliefs about children and childhood
  • Develop learning provocations and how to make them more meaningful
  • Examining your space, materials and mood, and creating change within your learning environment

Trainer’s Profile

Logan Z. is an early childhood and elementary educator with experience teaching in the United States, Ireland and China. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Development and Family Studies and a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education. Growing up in the mountains of Colorado, USA, Logan has a passion for exploration and the outdoors; both playing a role in her educational pedagogy. After attending the Reggio Emilia International Study Group in Italy, Logan’s passions for inquiry based and child centered learning were ignited. She has since  collaborated with educators across the globe to develop their philosophies, and to create beautiful learning environments through the Reggio Emilia approach.

Methodology

This workshop will provide opportunities to reflect on current practices, to ask questions and engage in meaningful discussions, and to collaborate with other participants through hands-on activities.
