Art is a powerful language through which young children explore ideas, express emotions and make sense of their experiences. Yet in many early childhood classrooms, art activities are often limited to crafts that focus on producing identical products rather than encouraging creativity and thinking.
Exploring the Elements of Art: Art as a Language of Learning invites educators to rethink how art experiences can support children’s thinking, imagination and self-expression. Inspired by the philosophy of the Reggio Emilia approach, this workshop explores how artistic exploration can become a meaningful part of children’s learning.
Across two interactive online sessions, participants will explore the elements of art—line, shape, colour, texture, form and space—and how these elements can be introduced through open-ended materials and creative experimentation. Teachers will also examine how art can function as a language for representing ideas, documenting thinking and deepening learning. Participants will design art provocations and plan creative learning experiences that encourage children to explore, experiment and express themselves through multiple artistic languages.

Methodology
This workshop adopts an interactive and experiential learning approach, combining short presentations with visual examples, reflective discussion and collaborative design activities. Participants will explore the elements of art through observation of classroom examples and guided analysis of children’s artwork.
Through breakout-room discussions and hands-on planning tasks, teachers will design art provocations and learning experiences that encourage open-ended exploration and creative expression. The workshop emphasises reflection and dialogue, enabling participants to connect artistic experiences with children’s thinking, imagination and meaning making.
