Learn some simple strategies to be more present in conversation. Part of the whole-school social and emotional learning model is strengthening the social and emotional skills of the adults in the environment. This course provides direct practice in self-awareness and relationship skills resulting in feeling more confident during conversations and staying focused when interacting with others. It accomplishes this by training participants in practices to be more aware when communicating and giving educators the opportunity to contemplate what it means to be fully present when speaking with students, parents, and other educators.

Objectives
Participants will be able to:

  • Define communication and describe the ways that humans learn to communicate
  • Understand what presence is in communication and have an embodied experiences of it
  • Use strategies taught to communicate skillfully in relationships with the self and others in and out of school

Session 1: Being a Communicating Animal and Cultivating Presence

  • Environmental awareness practice
  • The biology of communication
  • Mindful listening practice with interruptions
  • The neurobiology of communication
  • Defining mindfulness and journaling about presence in communication
  • Exploring using anchors to practice mindful presence
  • Closing practice

Session 2: Relational Presence

  • Drawing the benefits of presence
  • Body awareness practice
  • Understanding choice points when we choose to speak or listen
  • Choice points embodied practice with a partner
  • Discussion: How can these tools be used in the communications we guide with students, families, and other educators?
  • Q&A

Trainer’s Profile
Jill S. is a  social and emotional learning trainer and coach based out of Blaine, WA, USA. For most of her 25-year career, she has worked in American and Chinese public and independent schools with young people (ages 2-18) and their families as a teacher, school administrator, and most recently the Teacher Coach and Academic Director of Pullman Community Montessori in Washington state. Holding a master’s degree in educational leadership from DePaul University in Chicago, IL, USA, as well as a Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction Facilitator qualification from Brown University, she brings a mindful lens to educational practice. She has practiced meditation for thirty years and has led meditation practice groups for fifteen years. She is fascinated by the ways that schools acculturate students and enjoys sharing tools to help make classrooms and subsequently cultures places that work for us all!

Methodology
Didactic presentations, group discussion, sitting, walking, and movement meditation practices, drawing.
