Differentiated instruction is a philosophy that begins with the individual child. Each child’s levels of achievement and learning processes are considered in order to build an authentic process of individual learning.
The focus of this interactive online workshop is to enhance understanding and application about differentiate instruction principles in developing and maximizing learning in early year settings.
Strategies used in this workshop will emulate a differentiated instruction process, through the use of discussions, hands-on and reflective activities, and engaging participants in appropriate choices.
Objectives
Participants will identify and discuss:
- Core components of differentiated instruction and learning
- The roles of the adult and child in a differentiated instruction setting
- Documentation children’s learning, skills, and interests
- Planning techniques and organization of the learning environment to implement a differentiated learning curriculum

Session 1: Overview of Differentiate Instruction
- The key components of differentiated instruction and learning:
- The differentiated classroom
- The elements of differentiation
- Focus of learning
- Healthy environment
Session 2: The Roles of the Adult and Child
- The role of the adult in a differentiated instruction setting:
- Identification of learning to be achieved
- Identification of how to structure learning to maximize success
- Identification of engaging children in active participation
- Documentation strategies
- Collections of children’s works
- Self-evaluation tools
- Learning journals, learning logs, portfolios
- Documentation panels
Session 3: Planning Techniques and Organization of the Learning Environment
- The role of the child in a differentiated instruction setting:
- Identification what is known
- Identification of what is still needs to be learned
- Identification of how to best achieve learning
- Planning techniques to implement differentiated learning to maximize individual learning:
- Providing opportunities for children to engage in active learning
- Providing a broad range of materials and resources
- Of varying difficulty,
- Suitable for a variety of background experiences,
- Focusing on children’s interests and abilities
- Organizing the learning environments in a variety of formats – visual, auditory, reflective, concrete, realistic, developmentally and culturally appropriate
Trainer’s Profile
Dr. Crowther has been involved in in-service training, on site, at conferences and workshops both nationally and internationally. She has presented in urban, rural and isolated jurisdictions across Canada. The focus of these presentations has been to improve individualized sustainable, quality of childcare services for early childhood professionals.
She has published numerous textbooks and articles in association newsletters and other professional journals. Current publications include concept books that bridge the gap between theory and practice. She writes articles and concept books based on client demand. Dr. Crowther also publishes resource books and support materials on demand.
