This course will give teachers a nuanced understanding of the components of culture and intercultural sensitivity through interactive experiences that explore several cultural models. In addition, it will expose participants to the International School Counselor Standards Global Domain, as well as introduce the idea of “transformative Social and Emotional Learning”. Experiential activities will allow educators to explore the concepts of cultural identity, marginality, privilege, and systems of oppression. Upon completion, teachers will have foundational knowledge necessary to expand classroom curriculum that teaches global perspectives or international mindedness as well as tools to deepen cross-cultural relationships in and out of the classroom.

Objectives
Participants will be able to:

  • Develop a nuanced awareness of the components of culture
  • Learn several models of cultural understanding
  • Explore cultural identity including marginality, privilege and how that ties into systems of oppression
  • Gain fundamental understandings to teach social and emotional learning in the global perspective domain more effectively

  • Exploring Hierarchies & Intersectionality
  • Introduction to the concepts of Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

Trainer’s Profile

Jill S. is an educational consultant and social and emotional learning trainer and coach based out of Bellingham, WA, USA. For most of her 25-year career, she has worked in American and Chinese public and independent schools with young people (ages 2-18) and their families as a teacher, school administrator, and most recently the Early Childhood Social and Emotional Learning Specialist in an international school in China. She holds a master’s degree in educational leadership from DePaul University in Chicago, IL, USA and is a Positive Discipline Association certified trainer.  She is fascinated by the ways that schools acculturate students and enjoys sharing tools to help make classrooms and subsequently cultures places that work for us all!

Didactic instruction, role-play, large and small group discussions, self-assessment, verbal and written reflection, and peer teaching

Teachers, counselors, administrators working with students ages 0 – 18, as well as school staff that work in cross-cultural settings or organizations that aspire to be internationally minded.
