In this workshop, we will explore teaching methods and strategies to ensure that language and literacy skill development is nurtured throughout the day in all curricular areas.

During whole group and small group interactive sessions, teachers will engage in lively discussions, exploration, and the design of lessons that are authentic, developmentally appropriate, and just plain fun!

Objectives
Participants will:

  • Identify the common content areas in a robust early education curriculum
  • Self-assess curriculum being taught and identify possible curricular additions
  • Discuss early language and literacy markers and developmental benchmarks
  • Create and share engaging lessons for various content areas
  • Identify methods to capture literacy learning in an authentic environment
  • Develop a comprehensive list of resources

Outline
Session 1:

  • Overview of the Early Childhood Curriculum
    • Identify and discuss each content area typically included
    • Complete self-assessment of program for future planning purposes
    • Discuss the four cornerstones of language arts; listening, speaking, reading and writing
    • Map developmental milestones
    • Celebrating language and literacy activity
    • Session review and resource notation

Session 2:

  • Integrating Language and Literacy in Math Learning
    • Identify concept(s) focus
    • Pairing literature with math lessons
    • Designing a sample lesson
    • Identify “in the moment” tools to document learning
  • Integrating Language and Literacy in Science Learning
    • Identify concept(s) focus
    • Pairing literature with science lessons

Trainer’s Profile

Dr. C. Hammett is an Early Childhood Education consultant with an extensive background in teaching that includes pre-kindergarten, special education, and physical education.  Dr. Hammett also served as an elementary school principal, an adjunct professor in higher education, and is currently serving as a consultant to a PreK-12 public charter school.  Throughout her career, Dr. Hammett has presented workshops and trainings in a variety of early childhood topics, in local, regional, national and international venues.

As a consultant, Dr. Hammett focuses on helping teachers develop skills and confidence to serve young children in authentic, playful environments.  Her particular passion is reading development.  Dr. Hammett’s publications include teacher resource books and children’s albums.

Methodology

This workshop focuses on developing language and literacy skills in authentic pre-primary and early primary classrooms.  It is designed on the premise that reading, writing, listening, and speaking concepts should be integrated in all aspects of the curriculum.  Content area integration has proven to be a vital approach to ensuring the develop of early language and literacy.

Participants will be asked to have several children’s books (wordless books, picture books, and/or early readers available to them during the workshop.  Access to a printer may be helpful as well.  You are welcome to use a document camera if you have one available (for screen sharing).  This is not required!

Target Audience

This workshop is designed for teachers of children ages 3-6 years.  Support staff and early childhood special education teachers will also find this workshop of benefit.
