[LIVE] Well Teachers, Well Students: Mindfulness Practices in Difficult Times

This course will introduce mindfulness to teachers, as well as expose them to the fundamental sitting, moving, and communication practices of this approach to managing wellness in one’s life. Participants will also be introduced to the elements of mindfulness in working with young people in the classroom.
Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Learn what mindfulness is and is not, as well as its benefits
- Understand how mindfulness integrates into adult wellness.
- Gain exposure to the elements of mindful teaching and how that relates to social and emotional learning in the classroom.
- Practice mindful sitting, mindful walking, mindful stretching, and mindful listening.
- Reflect on wellness goals and make a plan to progress on them.
Outline
- Mindfulness of the environment and ice breaker
- Components of wellness and wellness goals
- Elements of mindfulness, as well as its benefits and challenges.
- Practice using an anchor (the breath, sensations in the body, or sounds in the environment) and noticing unpleasant feelings in the body in a sitting meditation.
- Applying the elements of mindfulness in the classroom, as well as an introduction to the different aspects of mindful teaching.
- Understanding stress reactivity group activity and discussion
- Mindful walking practice with focus on pleasant sensations in the body
- Pleasant Sensations Group Activity
- Mindfulness Mediated Stress Responses
- Self-reflection on at least one action to make progress toward the wellness goal identified at the start of the workshop and group share
Trainer’s Profile
Jill S. is an educational consultant and social and emotional learning trainer and coach based out of Bellingham, WA, USA. For most of her 25-year career, she has worked in American and Chinese public and independent schools with young people (ages 2-18) and their families as a teacher, school administrator, and most recently the Early Childhood Social and Emotional Learning Specialist in an international school in China. She holds a master’s degree in educational leadership from DePaul University in Chicago, IL, USA and is recognized by the Brown University Center as a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction facilitator. She is fascinated by the ways that teacher wellbeing impacts students and looks forward to sharing tools for maintaining balance in challenging times!
Methodology
Experiential activities including mindful sitting and movement practices, large and small group, didactic instruction, role play, and written reflection.
