Research has shown that when students operate from a growth-oriented mindset, they are more likely to challenge themselves, learn from mistakes and setbacks, cope with adversity, and become innovative problem solvers. Focusing on mindset development helps students develop cognitive flexibility, innovative and adaptive thinking strategies, perseverance, resilience, self-discovery, and the ability to receive and give constructive feedback. A growth-oriented perspective and approach to teaching are critical components positively impact their education and attainment. Educators have great influence and can impact mindset development of their students as they adopt and integrate mindset approaches to teaching and learning.
In this workshop, participants will learn multiple strategies and techniques to support a growth-oriented pedagogy. Multiple factors impact the mindset of learners. To start this journey, educators need to assess and reflect on their own thinking and application of growth-oriented principles and practices, so they consistently model these skills. Additional factors to support a growth-oriented classroom culture will be discussed.
Objectives
Participants will be able to:

- Apply process praise and process-oriented/constructive feedback
- Understand the connection between neuroscience and growth-oriented mindset development
- Teach, promote, and encourage the development of growth-oriented mindsets of their students
- Discuss the 7 C’s of Resilience and its connection to mindset development
- Identify the multiple factors to foster a growth-oriented mindset classroom culture

Day 1: Understanding Growth-Oriented Mindset
- Fixed, mixed, or growth mindset
- Self-assessment, reflection, and areas of growth
- Benefits of a growth-oriented mindset learning environment
- Neuroplasticity and mindset
- Common thinking traps and negativity bias
- Learning from mistakes, failures, and challenges
- Applying the 3C’s to challenge negative thinking patterns
- Personal challenge application: Noticing, Identifying, and Correcting Negative Thinking Patterns
Day 2: Applying a Growth-Oriented Mindset Pedagogy
- What is a growth-oriented mindset pedagogy?
- Process-oriented praise and feedback
- What is the difference between person and process praise?
- How do I use process-oriented/constructive feedback?
- How do I teach students how to use process-oriented/constructive feedback?
- Key language in a growth-oriented mindset classroom

Trainer’s Profile
Dr. Oliver is an educational consultant and social-emotional learning expert and trainer based out of Lafayette, IN, USA. For the past thirteen years she has taught in the Graduate School Counseling Program at Butler University. Prior to her current role, she worked as middle school counselor (with experience at the elementary and high school levels too) and served as a grief therapist for children and adolescents ages 3-22. She sees her role as a resource and support for all educators as well as an advocate and source of positive change for the entire school community.
Dr. Oliver is the co-author of Indiana Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Competencies: A Neurodevelopmental Culturally Responsive Framework. She has written and designed three SEL Educator courses, an SEL Specialist Educator course, co-developed nine SEL microcredentials, and co-developed Indiana’s Social-Emotional Wellness Coaching Model.
Methodology
Didactic instruction, scenario application, large and small group discussions, modeling of instruction, self-assessment, verbal and written reflection, and processing activities. Participants will have the opportunity and are expected to be active participants in the discussion, both within the small and large group formats, reflecting on their own educational journey.
