Making Music a Multi-Sensory Experience

Brain research now suggests that thinking and moving are closely linked. Through sensory motor activities, connections are made that provide the framework for higher thinking. A child’s self esteem is also enhanced when their motor skills are highly developed. Using varied props in gross motor and fine motor activities encourages hand and eye and foot and eye coordination. It lays the building blocks for eye convergence, essential for reading and writing.
Movement and sensation are closely linked, only when the movement and sensation are fully integrated in a child’s developing brain can they learn optimally. Our skin is the body’s largest sense organ and is linked, through the brain to both the eyes and the ears. Our children need a rich sensory experience to fully engage the brain and multi-sensory music and movement activities can provide a strong basis for achieving this. Activities that include playful rhymes, songs, dances games and lots of varied movement with objects to move, feel, touch , hold and watch will encourage sensory motor integration, motor timing skills, and motor planning skills. Pre-schoolers need lots of gross motor activities to prepare for the fine motor skills needed as they meet later learning challenges.
Objectives
The workshop aims to give a clear understanding and practical experience of :
- The latest brain research on movement and sensory integration and it’s link with increased learning potential for young children.
- A brief overview of the brain and how it functions in relation to children’s movement development.
- Fun ways to encourage a varied movement experience with objects to feel, hold, move and eye track.
- Developing a repertoire of developmentally appropriate songs, music activities and games.

- Finger plays
- Dances and circle games
- Beat activities
- Activities to aid co-ordination and motor timing
- Varied props that can motivate and engage children
Trainer’s Profile
Carol C. is a teacher and social worker with a Masters in Early Childhood Studies from Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. Carol has extensive experience in dance (folk, classical and jazz) and yoga. She specializes in educational early childhood performances as well as in-service music and movement training for early childhood teachers and carers in Sydney and throughout Australia. Carol, together with Gary, has produced a wide range of music and movement resources for teachers of young children. Carol’s passion is combining the many learning possibilities that music and movement offer young children, with a love of world music and dance.
