Effective Negotiation with Children

The Negotiation Workshop provides participants with an interactive format that includes discussions, reflective exercises, collaborative teamwork, and hands-on experiences.
Objectives
At the end of the workshop participants will:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the steps of a negotiation process
- Identify the roles of the adults and children before, during, and after the negotiation process
- Identify effective strategies that lead to a successful negotiation process
Outline
Day 1:
- Discuss and define negotiation
- Identify the negotiation process
- Identify age differences in the negotiation process
- Demonstrate understanding of children’s thinking at various ages
- Identify how children think at various ages
- Discuss how children’s thinking affects interaction patterns
- Discuss and list the steps in a negotiation process
- Identify the steps in a negotiation process
- Collaborate to develop effective strategies per step in the negotiation process
Day 2:
- Discuss and define the role of the adult in the negotiation process
- Demonstrate an understanding of the preparatory steps needed to start a negotiation process
- Discuss how adult behaviour impacts directly on the success of the process
- Develop a list of strategies to avoid in a negotiation process
- Discuss and define the role of children in a negotiation process
- Collaborate to define how children’s behaviour impacts on the process
- Discuss how to set expectations for children before, during, and after the negotiation process
- Develop strategies for different age groups to be involved in a negotiation process
- Review case studies to identify effective and non-effective strategies
- Revise case studies to lead to greater success in a negotiation process
- Summarize effective strategies common to a negotiation process
- Work in groups to develop a fact sheet to support staff in a negotiation process
- Identify potential problems and develop appropriate solutions
Trainer’s Profile
Dr. Crowther’s background includes teaching in early childhood, elementary school, university and college programs. She has presented at numerous childcare conferences both nationally and internationally. She has published articles in a variety of journals and has completed ten textbooks in the early years, and a number of children’s books that include photographs of children in a variety of international settings at play.
Today Dr. Crowther is working in various jurisdictions to help to develop developmentally appropriate learning environments and curricula for children and to facilitate adult learning in early years settings.
Methodology
Information will be presented through a variety of formats including, case studies, scenarios, slide shows, photographs and short videos. Participants will engage in active participation through:
- Discussion groups
- Analysis of scenarios and or case studies
- Reflective exercises to consolidate learning
- Focused problem solving based on individual requests and examples

Suitable for individuals working or caring for infants to six-year olds including children with special needs.
