The focus of this workshop is to learn how to create a positive classroom climate through scaffolded social and emotional learning experiences that teachers reinforce and apply throughout the school day with a focus on creating and maintaining connection with young children.

Objectives
Participants will be able to:

  • Learn the theory behind Positive Discipline
  • Discover practical applications to use the theory to create optimal learning environment
  • Understand how it is structured in the early years classroom
  • Gain practical skills to teach social and emotional learning
  • Explore tools to solve behavior challenges with children

Outline 
Session 1: Introduction to Positive Discipline

  • Learn the theory behind Positive Discipline and how it can be used in the classroom and school-wide
  • Understand the importance of creating routines and jobs in the classroom
  • Explore different approaches to classroom discipline
  • Experience interactions with adults from a child’s point of view
  • Find out the teacher’s position in establishing a collaborative classroom culture
  • Identify the importance of a long-term view toward discipline

Session 2: Connection

  • Experience the impact of teacher’s tone and body language on children cooperation
  • Learn about attachment styles and how they impact teaching and learning in the classroom
  • Discover tools to help students with traumatic experiences from healthy attachments with their teachers
  • Develop an inquiry-based mindset to determine underlying causes for children misbehavior and how to address it
  • Understand that misbehaving children are often missing social skills and look at ways to address the gap

Session 3: Tools for Teaching Emotional Regulation and Communication Skills

  • Develop an understanding of the emotional regulation and communication skills necessary to have effective class meetings
  • Recognize the parts of the brain involved in emotional regulation
  • Create a tool kit for teaching communication skills to children
  • Explore the mistaken goals of misbehavior and learn proactive and responsive strategies to deal with them
  • Practice effective ways to give directions and problem solve with children

Trainer’s Profile

Jill S. is an educational consultant and social and emotional learning trainer and coach based out of Bellingham, WA, USA. For most of her 25-year career, she has worked in American and Chinese public and independent schools with young people (ages 2-18) and their families as a teacher, school administrator, and most recently the Early Childhood Social and Emotional Learning Specialist in an international school in China. She holds a master’s degree in educational leadership from DePaul University in Chicago, IL, USA and is a Positive Discipline Association certified trainer.  She is fascinated by the ways that schools acculturate students and enjoys sharing tools to help make classrooms and subsequently cultures places that work for us all!

Methodology

Experiential activities including role play, small group discussion, large group discussion, peer teaching, and reflective practice.
