In this workshop, participants will be invited to explore and encounter the principles of the Reggio Emilia Approach. What are the key features of the education of young children with the thoughts of theory and practice that have made the Reggio Emilia Approach so inspiring in the schools world wide? Participants will be invited to experience all the principles over the time period of the workshop. There will be provocations and materials arranged for participants to engage and use together in groups or individually. Through these exploration of the materials and learning experiences, participants will have an understanding of how thoughtful materials and resources connect with the guiding principles of the Reggio Emilia approach.
The guiding principles consist of the following:
- The image of the child: children are active protagonists of their own learning
- The hundred languages
- Listening
- Research in Education
- Educational Documentation
- Progettazione: the process of education taking shape
- Organization
- Environments, Spaces, Relations
- Professional Development
- Assessment
We will explore each of these key principles of the Reggio Emilia Approach and how they can be interpreted for others to understand the process of children’s learning.
Objectives
At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Understand the core values of the guiding principles as participation, learning environments, collegiality, ateliers, family and community, documentation, and social constructivism. All of these values are discussed throughout the principles and will guide the participants to connect with each one
- How to apply and adapt these guiding principles to your own programs
- Participants will leave with ideas to implement each guiding principles into their programs
Outline
Day 1:
- Introduce the guiding principles of Reggio Emilia approach
- In small groups, participants will be invited to engage with materials and resources that include: The Image of the Child;The Hundred Languages; Listening; Research in Education; Educational Documentation
- The first set of principles will be carefully designed to implement an interactive group activity that will engage participants to understand how these guiding principles can be adapted into their own classroom programs.
- There will be a setup of materials displayed after each description and brief presentation of the guiding principle
- Participants will have part of the workshop period to interact with these materials.
- At the end of each guiding principle group activity, participants will be asked to join in conversations about their learning experiences.
Day 2:
- Participants will continue to explore the guiding principles: Progettazione; Organization; Environment, Spaces, Relations; Professional Development; Assessment.
- A continuation of the previous day, participants will be introduced and shown brief presentation on the remaining guiding principles.
- In small groups, participants will be invited to engage with materials that will provoke learning experiences. Materials and/or resources will be arranged for participants to use materials and to explore the possibilities of how these materials and ideas can be implemented and adapted into their own programs.
- At the end of each group activity, participants will have the opportunity to engage in the conversations around the experiences with the materials with the whole group.
Trainer’s Profile
Rosalba B. is a passionate and enthusiastic early learning educational consultant with vast experience working with children, their families, and colleagues. She is a Registered Early Childhood Educator with a BAA from York University, artist, researcher, mentor, collaborator, leader, and lifelong learner. She brings her journey of being Reggio inspired as continuous learning with others, building on relationships, creating deeper thinking sessions. Her goal is to continue to advocate for early learning, educators, and children. To inspire, many along the way.
Rosalba continues to visit the schools of Reggio Emilia which provide her with a deeper pedagogical understanding and inspiration for her consulting and workshop sessions. She has also worked as a lead teacher in the Seneca Lab School and part time professor in the School of Early Childhood Education at Seneca College. Rosalba is also a founder member of the Ontario Reggio Association which was established in 2007 as a non-profit organization for educators who are interested in the work and education system of the infant-toddler and preschools in Reggio Emilia.
Methodology
This presentation of workshops will begin explanation of the Reggio Emilia approach. Opening presentations of the Image of the child and how we view children in our own context. We will discuss the roles of the school, community, and the environment and how they support the guiding principles. The guiding principles will be divided over the course of two days, allowing participants to engage deeply in the materials and resources set out that support these guiding principles.
Participants will be able to implement and interpret to bring the ideas back to their own programs.
