This workshop will introduce participants to the essentials of social and emotional learning (SEL). SEL is a vital part of personal growth and lifelong learning. It involves the ways in which children and adults develop and apply their knowledge, skills, and attitudes to build a positive sense of self, manage emotions, set and reach meaningful goals, show care and concern for others, build supportive relationships, and make responsible choices that take into account of broader community needs.
Participants will also examine the key environments and core competencies present in schools that successfully embed SEL into their practice. Schools that adopt SEL often see benefits such as learners with stronger interpersonal and self-regulation skills, communities with better stress-management strategies, and a reduction in disciplinary concerns. Others observed benefits include greater academic engagement, enhanced student wellbeing, and better preparation for future opportunities. Over time, these efforts contribute to more adaptive individuals, stronger community ties, and positive social and economic growth.
