Within the Early Years it is understood that children develop at different rates. The importance of an inclusive environment that meets the needs of the children cannot be under estimated and strategies for support must be relevant and accessible. Best practice for children with SEN requires an understanding of child development, a graduated approach and support delivered on a universal, targeted or personalised level.  This course aims to provide an understanding of these factors and how practitioners can implement them.

Objectives
Upon successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Be aware of the different dimensions of need for children with SEN
  • Understand the difference between a ‘developmental need’ and SEN
  • Understand a ‘graduated approach to ‘assess, plan, do and review’.
  • Plan effectively to meet the needs of children with SEN
  • Review their enabling environments to support independent learning for children with SEN

Outline
Day 1: Introduction to Special Educational Needs

  • Access or inclusion
  • The prime areas of learning
  • What is a ‘developmental need’ or a ‘Special Educational Need’
  • The identification of the needs of individual children
  • Universal Inclusive practice
  • How children’s needs can be best met within the setting
  • Assess, plan do and review

Day 2: Strategies to support the dimension of needs

  • Gathering the important information
  • Universal, targeted and personalised support – what are the differences?
  • Support strategies for the dimension of need
  • Sharing skills and knowledge
  • Action planning, enhance, implement, discard

Trainer’s Profile

Sarah C. has been in education for over 20 years and has a Masters in Educational Leadership. She has had four headships and worked as Deputy CEO for Diocese of Ely Multi Academy Trust with 34 schools.

Sarah has experience and training skills across all areas of the primary phase with focus in EYFS practice.  Her knowledge of inclusion is extensive offering practical solutions having worked and led in many settings. Sarah led a team of internal experts and working with consultants that trained headteachers on all elements of the curriculum, SEN and assessment. Her focus was leadership and operational management to ensure continuity of provision across early years into KS1 and KS2 and inclusion across a school.
