The STEAM Movement: A Transdisciplinary Journey to Learning about the World is a two-day hands-on professional learning workshop designed for early childhood educators working with children aged 18 months to 6 years. Grounded in inquiry, play, and exploration, the workshop reframes STEAM as a way of thinking rather than a set of isolated subjects. Participants will engage in immersive STEAM stations covering Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics, using open-ended materials to experience learning from a child’s perspective. Educators will develop skills in observation, questioning, and documentation to make children’s thinking visible. Through collaborative planning sessions, participants will design a practical, developmentally appropriate STEAM project tailored to their own learning environments. The workshop empowers educators to confidently integrate STEAM into everyday practice, fostering curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving in young learners.

Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Understand STEAM as a transdisciplinary approach to learning that integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics through play and inquiry in early childhood.
  • Identify how children aged 18 months – 6 years demonstrate STEAM thinking, including curiosity, problem-solving, experimentation, and creative expression.
  • Design and facilitate hands-on STEAM experiences using open-ended materials and developmentally appropriate provocations.
  • Use observation, questioning, and documentation to make children’s learning visible and inform next steps.
  • Plan and implement an authentic STEAM project that is practical, adaptable, and ready for use in participants’ own learning environments.
